Hello friends!

As my internet connection was down, the last few days went in preparing for a school event I was co-hosting and reading. So this is another book I happened to read, as the review copy was sent to me. How glad I am to have got it!

The book I am reviewing today is Her Resurrection by Soumyadeep Koley

The book deserves a full 5 stars for the rendition of the story. The surprise is that written by a man, it is very sensitive and clear about the feelings of a woman. The words, the imagery and the smooth flow of the story does make you feel the pain and trauma of the protagonist Maya. Indeed a commendable work by the author. Surely the research done and delving into the skin of the character has added more humane touché to the story and the characters.

The story is about Maya, a little girl’s dreams and aspirations. It shows about the inhumane treatment meted out to women, just because they are born with the ‘unwanted’ gender. I mean, it surprises me how easily we call her a ‘burden, nuisance, trouble, curse’ without bothering to understand her thoughts and feelings.

What Maya sees as the daughter of the home, what she wants to achieve, how from a candidate of marriage to a victim of prostitution, all along the story is about her resurrection, her rise from her fall. Out of the many lines which struck me, one really was strong – when all is lost, then there is no fear in a person. Assaulted, brutally treated, shattered dreams and unending trauma leads to the burning and then the rise of the phoenix. The book is a complete journey of the innocent girl Maya, the tormented soul Maya, the valiant warrior Maya. We see her when she  is a vulnerable girl or a strong woman.

A must read to really know what it means to be a woman, especially in a country like ours, where it is hard to break the old traditions, where it is a crime to be born as a girl. A really emotional read!

Thanks for reading the review!

Stay happy and blessed!
